Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I examined the knowledge-related factors that affect the state location choices of Japanese investors when they established affiliates in the United States between 2003 and 2017. The results, constructed from an original database, showed that Japanese foreign direct investment favor states that are closer to Japan and with more direct flight access, which have higher industry concentration, and in which more Japanese firms are already located. These findings suggest that beyond economic considerations, Japanese firms select locations considered to be superior sources of knowledge, knowledge spillovers, and learning for foreign direct investment.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
This research is progressing smoothly. Since I have been on academic sabbatical at Harvard University in the United States for most of the academic year (since August 2018), I conducted more research on US-based companies this year.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I also conducted several interviews of US-based Japanese companies, whose content is being currently analyzed by text-mining software. I will then write a qualitative research paper to investigate the detailed knowledge drivers of Japanese firm location decision in the US.
