Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I empirically examined the detailed motives of long-term Japanese investors in the manufacturing and wholesale trade industries in the United States Southeast. I used a qualitative approach based on interviews and applied text analysis to identify. Results show that Japanese firms engage in market- and efficiency-seeking FDI, and still apply a classic sequence of gradual and incremental market commitments. Market size and growth rate, reducing transaction or transportation costs, and integration within local value-chains are the most important to them, while competition, creating an export base, lowering tax and accessing skilled labor are of little concern. This study offers current insights into the motives of Japanese FDI in two industries.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
This research is progressing smoothly. After data gathering in the US while on sabbatical last year, I was able to write and publish an article summarizing my findings.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I am now preparing a journal article of my previous findings on location choices of Japanese investors in the US to be published in a peer-reviewed English-language journal.
