Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Focusing on the city of York in the Middle East of England, This study analyzed the background of the formation of slum areas in the first half of the 19th century, and the process and significance of improving slum areas in the 20th century from a point of view of urban sociology and history. In the process of formation of the modern market by city governments, various contradictions accumulated were formed in the specific areas. Improvement of slums progressed as a policy of local governments. Market and accumulation of capital are the basic and essential functions of accumulation of contradictions. Market formation process has exposed poor areas. The improvement of the slums needed the formation of social recognition and social consensus that capital accumulation is a cause of poverty.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究は2018年から利用可能になったヨーク市公文書館所蔵「ヨーク市衛生局調査」データに基づく分析である。ハンゲイト、ウォルムゲイト両地区における衛生調査の詳細、ヨーク市の衛生対策が具体的に把握できるデータ資料である。 本研究は両地区に関する新規公開データに基づき、スラム改善のプロセス、ヨーク市の都市政策におけるスラム改善の意義を明らかにしたもので、1899~1901年にB.S.ロウントリーが実施したヨーク貧困調査の意義を再評価し、世界的に著名なロウントリーの貧困概念創出の背景を解明した点で国際的・学術的意義を有する。
