Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year we made excellent progress on our research and community engagement agenda. We held multiple public participatory design events in our community, made progress on the design of two sustainability-focused games (completing and publishing the Japanese version of a game called "Assistance"), and presented about our trans-disciplinary work at an international conference in the Philippines.
Our design work went smoothly, as we worked together across disciplinary boundaries on multiple games. As part of our research for the Tenryu River game we are producing, we toured the Tenryu river region with an expert colleague who we have brought in as a research collaborator. After this tour, we were able to develop a simple prototype for the game that we will prepare for public play-testing in the coming year.
We also collaborated with various stakeholders in our community in multiple ways. We held play-testing events with junior high school and high school students, and held an open community workshop introducing our work to adults.

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Over the past year we made excellent progress advancing our research and community engagement agenda, but since February, 2020, our research activities have been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our design work depends upon face-to-face human interaction and collaboration, and the pandemic has required us to pause collaborative student and community-focused events.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
This year, we are planning to: 1) complete an English translation of "Assistance," a game we completed in February 2020; 2) complete a print-and-play version of Assistance and publicize it on our website; 3) complete play instructions for Assistance; 4) create a prototype for the Tenryu River game we are creating; 5) create a prototype for a locally-focused game we are creating called "dokoda"; 6) publish and present about the process of our research to the degree that this is possible; 7) hold public collaborative design workshops for the games we are producing

Causes of Carryover |
Many of our biggest costs are incurred when games we design are printed. It is difficult to estimate printing/publishing costs in advance because we do not know the what components and materials our games will require in advance. Therefore, remaining money from previous financial years are needed to pay for printing costs that will come this year and/or in the following year.
