Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Due to the effects of the Covid19 pandemic, this project shifted from the development of Massive Open Online Courseware and the processes involved to that end, to the creation of on-demand contents for EFL learners studying remotely. The skills and knowledge acquired in the first years of this project were invaluable in making this sudden transition in the spring of 2020. As a result, the team shifted from design and best practice implementation to creation of curriculums that went into production almost immediately. Classes developed as live-online classes with some on-demand content and other classes were developed with 100% on-demand contents. Production for the on-demand classes included video-led instructions, simplified bi-lingual online slideshows and H5P interactive videos.
The team started out with live video instruction, but evidence from user logs showed a lack of student interaction with clickable video. From there, H5P was added to create interactive videos along with completion tracking systems used in Moodle to ensure student participation. In addition, long video explanations were converted to simplified bi-lingual slideshows. System logs showed more student interaction with the slideshows than was previously seen with just video explanations. Despite the compressed development schedule, courses were delivered successfully as on-demand curriculum and results mirrored face-2-face offerings of the same or similar curriculum. Direct comparisons were not possible due to differences in student groups and a lack of control data for the original face-2-face courses.
