Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Our work on characterizing the tradeoffs between speed, error, and dissipation in biological error correction using optimization theory is nearly finalized. Our work reveals novel non-trivial properties of optimal error correction, and we expect it to have a broad impact in this field. We currently have a working manuscript that we expect to submit in summer.
Our collaborative work on exploring the role of error correction in the context of cellular energetics has been finalized and published (Yang et al., Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 118 (26), 2021).
We also initiated a collaboration with Prof. Toyabe (Tohoku university) who is working to experimentally test our theoretical predictions.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

Our work on the tradeoffs between speed, error, and dissipation has been slowed down because of a delay in hiring a new postdoc in charge of finalizing the project (due to COVID-19 restrictions). We now have a postdoc (Shrabani Mondal) that is working on the manuscript and therefore we do not expect any further delays.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In the last year of the project, we plan to finalize our manuscript on tradeoffs between speed, error, and dissipation, submit it to an open access interdisciplinary journal, and present the results at international conferences.

Causes of Carryover

The remaining budget will be used for publication expenses, to publish our results in an open-access journal. Additionally, we plan to use part of the budget to participate to international conferences, where we will present our results.
