Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In Fiscal Year 2019 I continued the project by testing some implementations of the proposed idea, but could not find an optimal solution yet, because several issues turned out. I am also collaborating with colleagues (including outside the institution where I reside and outside of Japan) who are expert in magnetic properties of high-density matter to address such issues. We have been performing our first accurate simulations of relativistic resistive magnetohydrodynamics for binary neutron star mergers. We have already observed and qualitatively analysed one of the strong instabilities expected to develop, the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, which also produces a fast exponential growth of the magnetic field. We confirmed that its development can cause increases of the initial magnetic field of up to about three orders of magnitude. The project is ever more interesting, as new gravitational-wave measurements of binary neutron star mergers are found in the LIGO-Virgo collaboration, and soon in KAGRA as well.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The project has been delayed because of lack of time due to increased teaching load. Moreover, I could find only at the beginning of year 2020 a suitable student (master student, however, rather than doctoral student, who is working as a research assistant) to help in the coding and testing. This is also why I did not spend all the funds allocated for the past fiscal year.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The plans for the research scheme will not be substantially changed. However, this fiscal year I hope I am given more time to work on this project and progress will be faster. As mentioned above, I have found a research assistant (though a master student) who may assist me in this project.

Causes of Carryover |
Also because of the COVID-19 epidemic, I did not spend the money allotted to me in FY 2019.
