Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In Fiscal Year 2020 I have performed simulations of magnetized binary neutron star mergers with the codes I have been developing with the help of students and collaborators. We have followed multiple routes to tackling the problem of realizing relativistic resistive magnetohydrodynamics simulations of binary neutron star mergers with sufficient resolution and such that would take a reasonable time to complete, at most of the order of a few months. However, we have not found a satisfactory optimization of the codes and of the setups of the simulations. During our tests, as a side endeavor, we have also studied the effect of the initial choices of the magnetic fields, especially their orientation, on the amplification of the magnetic field and the structure of magnetic field lines formed after the merger and thought to lead to the emission of relativistic jets from these systems. The structure of the magnetic field in pre-merger neutron stars is not well known; however, it is expected to have a secondary influence on the magnetic field structure and amplitude after the merger, because of exponential amplification and saturation processes, which we can partly address in our simulations.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
The project has been delayed because of lack of time due to increased teaching load, also related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, it has been difficult to find and work with students on this project, again because of the pandemic. This is also one of the reasons why I did not spend all the funds allocated for the past fiscal year.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The pandemic does not seem to abate and it may bring further delays to the project. I do not think I will be able to work with research students as much as planned. As a matter of fact, results may be expected only in more than one year. Even if delayed, the project will go on following the original lines.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, in Fiscal Year 2020 travel to conferences etc. was basically not possible and I could work with a research assistant only for the first months of the year. Given the situation, I plan to use funds mostly for buying and upgrading computational hardware and software.
