Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
- Primary effort in this year was in quantitative analysis of the electron wave amplitude upon propagation through a CdTe crystal, via off-axis electron holography. Amplitude signal in electron holography is frequently neglected, but this topic proved much more complicated and more insightful than originally anticipated. - In summary, it was possible to quantitatively explain the observed electron wave amplitude changes in terms of the inelastic (electronic) and elastic (nuclear) scattering of the electron wave in the crystal. Reference measurements were conducted on amorphous carbon, diamond, silicon and platinum to corroborate the results. - The work was published in Journal of Applied Physics (featured article), as noted in publications section. - A second publication is at an advanced stage of preparation.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
- Full budget was not consumed this year, as corona-virus restrictions limited the planned travel; and a 5-year unit review caused some delay to the project. The budget was carried over into 2021 fiscal year.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
- At present, we are finalizing a second publication related to this work. - This relates to some fundamental learnings about quantitative holography amplitude measurements, and their relation to other techniques and intrinsic specimen material properties. - This relates mainly to data analysis and interpretation, but also some further confirmatory measurements will be performed.

Causes of Carryover |
- Full budget was not consumed this year, as corona-virus restrictions limited the planned travel; and a 5-year unit review caused some delay to the project. The budget was carried over into 2021 fiscal year. - The remaining sum will be utilized to fund additional confirmatory measurements in this fiscal year.
