Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The main aim of this research is the study on the Formation and Transformation of the Spanish Colonial Fortification City System in Philippine Islands. This research is focus on the study on the Geographical Location, Urban Spaces and Architecture of the Colonial Fortified Cities created during more than three centuries during Spanish colonial period (1521 to 1898) over the coasts of the archipelago of Philippines, with the purpose to protect against attacks from abroad. The formation of this fortified cities will be clarified by the studies of historical documents and maps from Archives of Philippines and Spain. The transformation study is based on the field survey of its current Urban Spaces and Architecture. Clarifying the fortification city system in the Philippines, this research seeks to contribute and expand knowledge of the past and heritage of these cities. Research is currently finalising the categorisation of cartographic maps and old geographic, military, urban and architectural maps of the Philippines from the National Archives of the Philippines and the Archives of the Indies in Spain. Actually is in the final stages of studying the various literature on the relationship of Philippine-Spanish Fortification construction and technological features with other fortifications built in Europe and Latin America. During this year has not been possible to carried on any fieldwork.
