Outline of Final Research Achievements |
For the purpose of developing useful cell function regulators, we searched for bioactive natural products that selectively arrest the progression of embryonic development of starfish at the late blastula stage. Bioassay-guided fractionation of the crude extracts resulted in the isolation of new macrocyclic diterpenoids, new sulfated purine glycosides, and new phenanthrene derivatives with an oxadinone ring from soft corals collected in the Red Sea, metabolites of seed-eating bruchid beetles, and roots of Asarum sp. Their structures were elucidated based on NMR and MS spectral data as well as X-ray crystallography. Several of these compounds have been found to inhibit cancer cell proliferation and induce apoptosis.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
