Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
We carried out a provisional experiment to determine (1) how Cs-133 is distributed within logs and (2) the most optimum way to sample logs based on the distribution of Cs-133. Cs-133 concentration in heartwood (27 ug/kg dry weight (DW), sapwood (28 ug/kg DW) and bark (71 ug/kg DW) was significantly different (P<0.05), and concentrations were not homogenous along the length of the logs. The current in-house method to sample logs involves mechanically breaking the wood into smaller pieces. We developed an alternative method to sample logs that is as robust as the in-house method but more time and labour efficient. This alternative method involves cutting a log multiple times along its length, and the resultant sawdust samples are collected and mixed to produce one representative sample for the entire log. We compared the transfer of Cs-133 based on heartwood, sapwood and sawdust to shiitake mushrooms (this is known as the transfer factor or TF) and found that the sawdust-to-shiitake TF (24) did not significantly differ (P > 0.05) compared to either the sapwood-to-shiitake TF (27) or heartwood-to-shiitake TF (29). The use of sawdust will greatly reduce the time for sample collection, and this will facilitate the sampling of a larger number of logs.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
A manuscript describing the results of the provisional experiment (above) is being prepared for journal submission. Also, from that experiment, we have obtained data on all minor and major elements in the logs and shiitake fruiting bodies.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The data of minor and major elements in logs and shiitake obtained in the provisional experiment will be sorted and statistically analysed from now. These findings will help guide the next stage of the project. The next stage will investigate the phenomena regarding the uptake, translocation and accumulation of radiocesium in shiitake using real-time radioisotope imaging system. Before beginning those experiments, we first need to produce shiitake fruiting bodies in the laboratory, and this will be undertaken over the next 12 months.

Causes of Carryover |
Last year I was suppose to buy a incubator to culture shiitake under special conditions but I did not buy it. I will buy it this year.
