Outline of Annual Research Achievements

During the first year of the research period, the plan was to study the history of cooperatives in Madagascar and to understand why several attempts to introduce them in rural areas failed.
Research objectives were met and a paper entitled “Agricultural cooperatives in Madagascar: a historical perspective” was presented at the Annual Meeting of the International Society of Agricultural and Rural Cooperative Studies in Taiwan in December 2018. The paper is currently being submitted to the International Journal of Agricultural and Rural Co-operative Studies.
A second paper based on the agricultural cooperative survey is being prepared. This paper was presented to development scholars during the Annual Meeting of the JASID meeting in Tsukuba in Nov. 2018 and at at Wesleyan Univ. in March 2019.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The research project is progressing smoothly because the project is well-planned and resources are already available.

The budget was not fully used last year because the project could be carried out by combining additional funding. The balance from last year’s budget will be used to fund several activities this year.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

A third paper entitled “Cooperating for whom? Exploring the recent revival of agricultural cooperatives in Madagascar” which looks at the relationship between agricultural cooperatives and agri-food multinational corporations is being prepared and will be presented at the Annual Conference of the Japan Association for African Studies that will take place in Kyoto in May 2019 and at the Journal of Peasant Studies’ Workshop in Critical Agrarian Studies that will take place at the China Agricultural University in Beijing in July 2019.

The literature review on the history of cooperatives in Madagascar will be supplemented by collecting first-hand data and secondary data. To do so, interviews with cooperative experts and archival research will carried out in France and Madagascar in 2019.

Causes of Carryover

The budget was not fully used last year because the project could be carried out by combining additional funding. The balance from last year’s budget will be used to fund several activities this year, namely fieldworks in France and Madagascar and international conference participation.
