Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This study aims to assess the benefits of being a cooperative member in a multi-stakeholder cooperative arrangement. The findings show that farmers have increased their income through better prices from the sales of their products. The cooperative’s production capacity also increased, contributing to an additional payment for members. From an economic perspective, this seems to be a success story as farmers get better prices and access to markets. However, from a broader perspective, that is, if we start to consider the backdrop that cooperatives are operating in and look for ways to bring farmers out of poverty now and permanently, it is hard to avoid asking a larger question about scale, meaning can such success be replicated nation-wide to bring about actual, sustainable development.
