Outline of Final Research Achievements

The tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) staging system updated several times is essential for predicting the prognosis, tailoring the treatment, and comparing clinical trials. In the latest update (the 8th edition), the T category for oral cavity cancer incorporates the depth of invasion (DOI). The DOI is different from the tumor thickness; in pathological studies it is measured from the level of the basement membrane of the closest adjacent normal mucosa.
We evaluated the inter-rater reliability of the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-derived DOI and the agreement between MRI and pathological measurements in patients with oral tongue cancer. MRI was a valuable modality for the preoperative staging. Selection of the optimal measurement protocol should be made on a case-by-case basis, depending on the location and the direction of tumor invasion. Additionally, MRI-derived DOI can predict nodal recurrence, while preoperative information may assist in treatment planning for oral tongue cancer.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
