Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
My research during FY2018 and FY2019 has accomplished two main objectives. First, archival research in several Spanish libraries and archives in relation to Diego Collado’s life and works has been very fruitful, and has shed a new light on the place and importance of Collado in the history of the relationships between Spain and Japan. The second goal is the critical edition of all the materials related to the Ars grammaticae Japonicae linguae, that is, the 1632 Latin text with its Spanish modern translation, two different Spanish 17th-century manuscript versions previous to the Latin printing, and a 17-century Spanish translation of the Latin text. The edition is accompanied by an analysis of the different textual stages and a thorough annotation of the most relevant aspects of the texts.
