Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the past financial year, first, I was able to participate several important international conferences and workshops at Hong Kong, New Delhi, Shanghai, South Korea, and Kyoto, to present my research output. Secondly, I was able to move on smoothly with my first monograph, which was a continuation from my previous Kakenhi project. The monograph would be published at the end of 2019(expected), under the title of 'Independent Filmmaking across Borders in Contemporary Asia', with Amsterdam University Press, a prestigious publisher in the field of humanities, especially in the field of media studies and film studies. Thirdly, besides the monograph, I was able to publish several articles in Chinese and English, on topics of Sinophone film auteurs and other Asian filmmakers in the contemporary setting. Finally, using Kakenhi, I was also able to organize several film-related events, including a film screening event (of a Chinese independent documentary) in November, 2018, with a Q&A session with the protagonist featured in the film. The event turned out to be super popular among my colleagues and the students. Many students, including international exchange students, wrote feedbacks to me on that film, which was really rewarding both in terms of my own research goals, and also in terms of the teaching dynamics.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
As a continuation of my previous work, in this academic year (2018 April-2019 April), I was able to move on with my monograph writing smoothly, and was able to submit my manuscript in time. The book is scheduled to be published by the end of 2019, with University of Amsterdam press. At the same time, I have also published other papers in English, Japanese, and Chinese.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
There are still a few new research directions that I want to explore more in the upcoming year (May 2019-April 2020). First, I would continue my project on Sinophone artists and filmmakers, by extending my project to Southeast Asian places. I might visit places like Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand to visit film archives, and to interview filmmakers. Secondly, I would participate international conferences to present my studies.
