| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In academic year 2020, due to the COVID pandemic, some scheduled trips could not take place but I did manage to visit film archives at Tokyo and Yamagata. Several side projects related to Chinese-language cinemas, independent filmmaking in the PRC have been developed, including a new collaborative project on arthouse cinema in contemporary China, even though the academic output may come later.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
As I have mentioned above, although my academic output may come a bit later in the academic year 2021, lots of important work and research had been carried out in the past year, including several journal articles. Meanwhile, through organizing online workshop and screening events, my research has been engaging with a slightly larger group of global audiences (including my students and colleagues).

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the final year of my project, I aim to first publish a Japanese-language academic monograph. Secondly, I want to realize the several on-going projects I started in the past several years, in getting my research output published in English and in Chinese. Third, in this final stage, I want to network with more researchers and develop new meaningful projects.

| Causes of Carryover |
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, lots of schedules had been interrupted. I will try my best to replan my expanses in academic year 2021.
