Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Two major tasks have defined my overall schedule. Firstly I have started the Japanese translation of my book (in English) with two translators, and our progress have been going well, yet to guarantee the quality, we have also extended the schedule a bit into Year 2022. Secondly, although a monograph was published in 2019, there are still several important research directions under the overall research theme that I have sought to further pursue. Therefore I have used the final stage to visit film archives and visit film festivals, while working on several writing and editorial projects that were related to my new Kakenhi project. Together with Akiyama Tamako of Kanagawa University, we co-edited the launching issue for the academic journal of Chinese Independent Cinema Observer (part of the Chinese Independent Film Archive), under the title of Sino-Japanese Connections in Independent Film Cultures (1989-2020). I was also able to present online or offline at both domestic and international conferences, workshops, and symposiums in relation to my research topics. The final year has been quite fruitful and productive.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

One of the most important plan has been the Japanese translation of my English monograph titled "Independent Filmmaking across Borders in Contemporary Asia". Together with 2 translators, we started the translation work since the autumn of 2021, but our progress has been slow due to the challenging theoretical framework, therefore we have to extend the Kakenhi a bit into the Financial Year of 2022. This is the major reason that I think my progress has been slightly delayed. All the other aspects of the project has been going smoothly.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

There are two major directors. Firstly, I would love to push further the studies of Sino-Japanese cinema connections in a contemporary setting, especially via the lens of independent filmmaking, without disregarding the aspects of circulation, distribution, and exhibition. Secondly, I would also look more into the directions of Chinese independent cinema since the 2010s, together with a rethinking its connections with art cinema.

Causes of Carryover

There has been a plan to translate my English monograph into Japanese, so a certain amount of budget has been kept for the translation work, which was not completely finished in the fiscal year of 2021.
