Outline of Annual Research Achievements

For the first time since 2019, the researcher was able to perform in person surveys of books and materials. In August 2022, the researcher photographed and surveyed books printed in the 17th-19th centuries, focusing on books that have not yet been photographed by the Art Institute of Chicago. In September 2022, the researcher photographed and surveyed an album of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets and documents relating to Nomura Shojiro’s art and antiquities dealing in Kyoto between the 1910’s to 1930’s. The first article on the literary and social aspects of Shojiro's Guest Books was published in January 2023. The signatories were chosen by the Nomuras and referenced each other’s entries to create a collaborative work. Female signatories often bemoan the difficulty of choosing their purchases, while male signatories humorously remark on how their wives are spending too much money.
The researcher presented on the pictorialization and popularization of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets in the 17th-18th centuries at the East Asian Consortium of Japanese Studies (online, November 2022) and at the Association for Asian Studies Conference (Boston, MA, March 2023). The researcher demonstrated that Ono no Komachi is easily recognized in Edo period (1603-1868) images due to the typification of her portrayal, this does not constrain artists, but rather enables artists to make humorous and multi-layered images that “parody” the traditional depiction of poets. The researcher also photographed and studied materials held in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art.
