Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The researcher has been able to see several aspects of her project come to fruition upon completion of FY2018 and was able to disseminate the results of her research through various media. She successfully delivered a paper entitled, “From An Isolated Archipelago: Lacquer and Literary Space” at Oxford University, for which she received positive feedback from the audience and was advised to look into inventories for more evidence of japanned items. March 2019 saw the publication of two articles, “‘To One Another as Christians’: Alexander Pope and Jesuits,” which appeared in a peer-reviewed journal at her institution, and “Visualising Alexander Pope’s ‘Altars of Japan’,” in a British peer-reviewed journal that was established in 1849 and is now operated by the Oxford University Press.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The researcher deems it fitting to consider that the project is progressing at a steady rate, seeing that the results have appeared in two peer-reviewed journals, one domestic and the other international. She has also delivered an oral presentation at a major international conference on eighteenth-century studies in the United Kingdom. In addition to attending an annual conference on English literature, philology, and linguistics in Japan, the researcher has also attended one on ecocriticism, as well as a writers’ conference, in an attempt to acquire new perspectives and broaden her academic interests for both current and prospective research on the impact of oriental commodities in English culture and literature.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The researcher envisages continuation of satisfactory progress. She aims for the submission of two articles to peer-reviewed journals before the completion of FY2019, which are well under way in terms of preparation. For FY2019, the researcher thus far plans to attend a domestic annual conference on French language and literature. In early 2020, she plans to deliver another paper again at the said annual British conference. The researcher is currently at work on book proposals, the submissions of which, if successful, may potentially advance the project considerably. Overall, in FY2019, the researcher will further pursue her intended research, all the while keeping in line with twenty-first-century orientalist discourse and postcolonialism, the major theoretical axes of this project.

Causes of Carryover |
Actual expenditure for both article costs and travel expenses were slightly less than anticipated, as it was the first year of research. The remaining amount will be used in the next fiscal year to help fund the purchase of electronic articles as well as overseas research trips.
