Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Due to the situation surrounding the novel coronavirus, I was unable to conduct any fieldwork in Yaeyama as I had planned to do. For this reason, I have requested an extension of funding into the next year.

As I was unable to conduct new fieldwork, I focused this year on the following two tasks: (1) organizing and transcribing field recordings from previous fieldwork trips, and (2) analyzing and preparing an article about the honorific verbal morphology of three different dialects of Yaeyaman and comparing them with Japanese. I was able to present this research at the Semantics and Linguistic Theory 30 international conference, and have now published the paper in the associated proceedings.

4: Progress in research has been delayed.

Reason

Due to the novel coronavirus, I was unable to conduct fieldwork in Yaeyama as planned. I have submitted an application to extend funding into the next year, so that I can conduct the fieldwork that was delayed.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

My plans for this year depend significantly on the situation surrounding the novel coronavirus. I plan to conduct fieldwork during the summer (June and July) if I am able to, but I may have to delay this if the novel coronavirus situation does not improve. The primary purpose of this fieldwork will be to fill gaps in the transcriptions of existing recordings.

On the basis of this data, I plan to write a descriptive paper describing the verbal morphology of Yaeyaman from a cross-dialectal and semantic perspective.

My other plans for the coming year are to continue transcribing and organizing data collected during previous years. I hope to make a portion of this data available online in the form of a corpus. I also plan to wr

Causes of Carryover

Due to the novel coronavirus, I did not use any of the money allotted for this year. I have submitted a request to have all of these monies extended into the next year, when I plan to use them for both conference and fieldwork travel.
