Outline of Final Research Achievements

Sight translation, or translation-at-sight, provides an important perspective common to both interpreting and translating, such as word order processing between English and Japanese. In addition to conducting a comprehensive literature review, this study includes experiments of its process to collect empirical data, and proposes some research methods to be applied to subtitling and historical interpreters. Focusing on process analysis of eye-tracking data, text mining of subtitle translation data, and historical consideration of unknown interpreters, I have published major research results as conference papers and book chapters.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

英語から日本語への通訳や翻訳におけるサイト・トランスレーション（サイトラ）についての学術研究は、通訳翻訳学の分野でこれまで十分な探究がなされてきたとは言えない。本研究の成果は、サイトラに関する理論的・実証的研究として、英日の言語ペアでの訳出にかかわるプロセスや語順処理の考察、忘れられた通訳史の発掘、新たな研究手法の応用などである。実証データの分析、順送り訳と結束性に着目した字幕翻訳データにおけるテキストマイニング手法の応用、歴史的な漂流民通詞の考察などによって、サイトラに対する広範な取り組みを試みた意義は大きいと考える。
