Outline of Final Research Achievements

The aim of this research is to understand the role of narrative reliefs, on which Buddhist stories such as ones from the life of Gautama Buddha were depicted, found in the Gandhara region in the north-western Indian subcontinent. By analyzing materials unearthed in excavations at ruins of Buddhist monastic temples in the Gandhara region, a part of Buddhist cultures there from the 1st century CE to the 3rd century CE was revealed.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

研究の結果、各時代において、ガンダーラで作られた浮彫画像帯がどのような様相を持っていたかが整理され、仏教美術の流れの一端が明らかになった。ガンダーラにおいては、ブッダの姿を積極的には描かない浮彫画像帯を用いていた時期と、ブッダが説法し、崇拝される姿を積極的に描く浮彫画像帯を用いていた時期の、２つの時期があったらしい。日本を含めた東アジアの仏伝図像を理解する上でも重要な研究成果である。
