Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This research analyzes the effects of the formation of bilateral free trade agreement (FTA hereafter) on the investment of multinational firms whose origin is from outside the FTA regions. In the past year, besides the data collected from the statistics group of MEXI, I also attempted to collect the tariff data for the imported trade goods from Korea to EU. This is important to our estimation because they can capture how the trade between Korea and EU have changed in response to FTA. I then use these data combined to explore how Japanese firms located in the EU region change their investment behavior in response to the formation of a bilateral FTA―the EU-Korea FTA which was signed in 2011. Basic estimation has been conducted, however, more detailed and sophisticated analysis is still yet to be done due to the data availability. This is expected to be finished in the incoming year.

Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

経済産業省へのデータ申請に想定以上の時間と労力がかかった。データの所有期限が短く、分析の途中で一旦経産省の統計室に返却しないといけないため、現在は再度申請しているところ。入手次第、分析の再開はできるようになる。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In the future research, there are two stages that I need to finish: 1) To continue the econometric analysis on how much Japanese firms’ choice of FDI strategies has changed in response to this economic shock (FTA). 2) To summarize the findings and present the paper in workshops or conferences. The working paper will be finished at least by the end of this calendar year.

Causes of Carryover

コロナの拡大により、当初予定の出張などが実施出来なかったため、新年度の旅費などに充てていきたいと考える。
