Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Applying visual research methods, this study seeks to show how various actors in higher educational institutions in Japan and Canada articulate the concepts of global citizenship and multiculturalism, and how their actions have relevance to the enhancement of diversity. In FY2018, the first year of this study, I did document analysis on the concepts of global citizenship and multiculturalism in Japan and Canada respectively. I also explored various visual research methods and launched a film project in order to visualize the notion of diversity. From June 2018 to February 2019, I collaborated with my seminar students in Kumamoto and made a short film together. In March 2019, I screened the produced film and conducted interviews and surveys in Vancouver, Canada.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
During the first year of the study, I was able to obtain the necessary data in both Japan and Canada as I planned. I conducted document analysis on the concepts of global citizenship and multiculturalism in both countries. In addition, I created a short movie representing the notion of diversity in collaboration with my seminar students in Kumamoto. The produced movie was screened and I carried out interviews and surveys in Vancouver, Canada.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In FY2019, the final year of the study, I will finish analyzing the data collected in both countries. In June 2019, I will present the research findings as well as the produced film at the annual conference of the Canadian Society for the Study of Education in Vancouver, and gain feedback. Finally, in winter 2019, the research outcomes will be published as an academic article.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The length of my fieldwork in Vancouver, Canada in FY2018 was shorter than the initial plan. Therefore, the saved amount will be used as travel expenses to present research findings at conferences in both Japan and Canada during FY2019.
