Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
To understand the implementation of Design and Technology(D&T)/Technology Education (TE) in Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia, the PI have conducted the initial phase of field visits and data collection. In addition, field visits and interviews had started in elementary schools in Fukuoka in order to develop case studies to understand the implementation of design education in Japan at elementary level. Two presentations were completed. The first presentation was related to learning environment for design education in Japanese elementary schools. The second presentation presented the characteristics of D&T and TE activities in Asia and Oceania schools.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
In the academic year of 2018, the initial research plan was to conduct field visits, interviews and data collection in secondary schools in 2 Asian countries. But the PI managed to establish a network that allowed the PI to conduct field visits, interviews and data collection from schools in 3 Asian countries with 1 country in Oceania to provide the broader perspective on the implementation of design education at secondary/junior high/high school level outside Asia. In addition, the PI also established a network with local academics/government officials/president of D&T Teacher association in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Australia respectively to further clarify and seek advice on the current implementation issues and challenges of D&T and TE.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the academic year of 2019, field visits, interview and data collection in overseas schools will continue. The PI hopes to visits more schools so that the data can be more accurate and representative for each country. At the same time, the PI hopes to continue with the study of design education implementation in elementary and local junior high schools in Japan so as to understand the current situation in Japan. The outcome of 2019 hope to clarify the development of critical thinking skills and creativity through design activities in the overseas schools.
