Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In AY2019 I was able to expand the research to conduct a new case study at a new institution, and conduct more interviews at one of my existing case study sites. I have also started collecting data from students as well as teachers and administrators. I have conducted 5 student interviews at 2 institutions, and 5 interviews with teachers and administrators at the same 2 institutions. They have been transcribed and a preliminary analysis has been completed. Initial results on student attitudes to language policy were presented at the Language, Identity and Education in Multilingual Contexts 3 Conference which took place in The Hague in February 2020, and a paper on this theme is currently being developed. I will continue to add to the data set and refine my analysis.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
As the project was delayed in the first year, I am still slightly delayed for the same reasons - namely the difficulty of coordinating visits to case study institutions around my duties at my institution.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Thanks to the extension granted, I will complete the project this year. Due to the problems visiting case study institutions due to the coronavirus, I plan to do more interviews using conferencing software, and if possible, add one final institution to my case studies (although this may be difficult in the current circumstances. I will refine my analysis using additional data and my continued reading on the subject to be able to produce a final report which compares attitudes among different stakeholders and offers recommendations for institutions who are grappling with the issue of language policy in non-classroom language learning spaces.

Causes of Carryover |
If possible, the remaining funds will be used for a research trip to the new case study institution to conduct observations and interviews. However, due to the coronavirus and restrictions on movement, a direct visit may not be possible. Some funds will be used to recruit students to take part in research interviews.
