Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This project investigated language policy at three different self-access learning centres (SALCs) in Japan with different policies (multilingual and monolingual) in place. SALC1: no language policy, SALC2: hybrid policy over 2 floors, SALC3: No Japanese policy. Interviews & focus groups were conducted with 6 administrators, 8 advisors/teachers, & 11 students. A survey of SALC users, & an analysis of the registry of SALCs in Japan was also conducted.
In 2021, final analysis was conducted on the data set. Findings include insights into attitudes towards language policy from both staff and students, details of attempts made to foster linguistic diversity, and a deeper understanding of the complexities of deciding and implementing language policy in multifunctional interactional spaces.
The researcher was invited to give a plenary speech based on this research at the Independent Learning Association conference, hosted online from Mexico (delayed from 2020). A presentation was also given on the initial results at the Japan Association for Language Teaching PanSIG conference (online). A paper has been submitted for an edited book collection, currently in the final stages of the revision process, and likely to be published in summer 2022.
