Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Samples were produced and optical measurements in the frequency domain were conducted. I could measure the change of the absorption of the sample. Proof-of-principle for optical impedance spectroscopy was achieved and characteristic and reproducible measurement results were achieved. The dependence on temperature, oxygen partial pressure and voltage bias was demonstrated. The results were already presented on five international conferences. Efforts have been expanded to another model material, Gd-doped Ceria. I am investigating the influence of light on the surface exchange and conductivity properties in order to understand the oxygen reduction reaction.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The problems with the limited stability of the Pt counter electrodes on the thin film model electrodes has not been fully resolved yet. The stability is still not satisfactory for systematic parameter variations. Limited access to experimental equipment during the last two months has further delayed the project. Experiments have been planned with project partners at IREC in Barcelona (Spain). Ellipsometry measurements should further clarify the ionic transport within the PCO, in order to separate surface from bulk effects, but the corresponding research stay has been cancelled due to the outbreak of the corona virus.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
A new electrode design has been planned. As soon as access to laboratory is possible again, these electrodes should be manufactured and the experiments shall be continued. Also, as soon as travel to IREQ in Barcelona (Spain) is possible, a research stay to perform the measurements is planned. Samples have already been sent to IREQ and calibration measurements have been conducted. The project partners are developing the required model for the final optical measurements.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The electrodes to contact the samples showed stability issues. This shall be resolved by a new electrode design in a few months. Ellipsometry measurements should be added to gain more information about the bulk processes, but those measurements could not be conducted yet, due to cancelled travel plans. This shall be done soon after travel restrictions are loosened.
