Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Systemic sclerosis is an intractable disease of unknown cause that causes fibrosis (sclerosis) of the skin and organs and vascular and immune abnormalities. Recently, botulinum toxin has been shown to regulate various cellular functions, including immune function and fibroblast proliferative capacity. In this study, the therapeutic effects of botulinum toxin on the pathogenesis (skin fibrosis, vasculopathy) of bleomycin-induced scleroderma in a mouse model of the disease are investigated and the mechanism is being elucidated. The effect of botulinum toxin on oxidative stress disorder was also investigated. The results of this study may lead to the development of new treatments for skin fibrosis in systemic sclerosis.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
