Prevotella copri isolated from rheumatoid arthritis patients possess unique region on the genome. Moreover, we found that the bacterium induced severe Th17-cell dependent arthritis in mice.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

これまで、Prevotell copri菌が炎症誘導や宿主の健康維持に関わることが示唆されていたが、病態増悪に関与する遺伝子領域は不明であった。本研究により、特有の遺伝子配列を持つP. copri菌が、関節炎誘導増悪に関与していることが明らかとなった。このことより、関節リウマチ発症における特定の腸内細菌の関与が示された。また、Helicobacter pyloriの除菌が慢性胃炎、胃十二指腸潰瘍を改善させるのと同じように、関節リウマチにおいても、関節炎惹起能の高いP. copriを除菌することができれば、関節炎を抑制できる可能性がある。
