Outline of Final Research Achievements

Follicular stem cell (FSC) is a one of epithelial stem cells, which is localized in other root sheath of hair follicle. In this study, I established two methods for effective isolation and expansion of human FSCs from hair follicles.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

現在、広範囲重症熱傷の治療に導入されている培養表皮は、表皮前駆細胞（基底角化細胞　basal keratinocyte; BK）に由来するものが使用されている。BKは、上皮化能が小さく、3度熱傷をそれ単独で上皮化することができないため、植皮術との併用が必要である。
本研究では、上皮系幹細胞で、BKよりも能力が高いことが想定されるFSCを安定的に調製する方法の開発に挑戦し、概ね確立することができた。今後は、上皮表皮化能などに関してBKと比較する。培養表皮の細胞源としてFSCが利用可能であれば、臨床的な貢献度は高いと言える。
