Outline of Annual Research Achievements

During this year we progressed with synthesizing evidence with regards to Advanced Care Planning in the intensive care context. This piece of work is nearly completed. A full report is generated currently and it will be submitted for publication soon.
The second phase of the study is underway. The networks for the final phase of the project are being set up. The UK site is progressing well, with some of the interviews being completed. Data collection was conducted during the last business trip in UK.
The Japanese site is in the process of identifying the right participants for interviews. Initial contacts have been made and the interviews are being planned. Also, translation service has been set up to facilitate the interviews with participants who cannot communicate in Japanese.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

The interviews with Japanese participants is slightly delayed, as it was revealed that many colleagues would not be comfortable to be interviewed in English. Translation assistance has been put in place to facilitate this process. As soon as the pandemic of COVID-19 subsides, we will be able to proceed with the final phase of the project.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The original plan for this year was to conduct the interviews with Japanese clinicians with regards to their opinions, attitude and preferences of use of Advanced care planning in ICU. ( April- June 2020). A business trip was planned to the UK to complete interviews with the UK colleagues ( July 2020). Finalize first manuscript of systematic review and submit for publication by October 2020. Complete Data analysis of interviews by December 2020. And prepare manuscript for the interview phase and project report by April 2021.
However, it is unclear now if we can proceed with the plans in place, given the COVID-19 pandemic. The business trip to the UK ( July 2020) had to be canceled and traveling to Japan to conduct interviews is at the moment on hold. In the meantime, however, I will be able to finalize the systematic review and submit it for publication.

Causes of Carryover

The interviews with the Japanese colleagues have been delayed, hence I did not use the money for traveling and translation fees. This amount will be used for traveling within Japan, translation fees and support of the assistant expenses who will accompany me to the interviews. This money will also support a second publication from this study.
