Outline of Final Research Achievements

Growth capability of epidemic influenza viruses and its influence on virus-induced cell death has not been fully investigated after the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. Nasopharyngeal swabs collected in Tottori Prefecture, Japan from 2009 to 2015 were subjected to virus isolation in a MDCK cell line. Epidemic influenza A/H1N1, A/H3N2, and B viruses showed a wide range of growth capability in MDCK cells. The growth was similar in A549 cells, correlated with the death rate of A549 cells, and the nasopharyngeal viral load. Growth capability should be considered as one of the key factors to predict prognosis.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
