Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the second year, I focused on gathering statistical data in Chad. I obtained the national account data and collected firm-level data in the manufacturing sector. Then I constructed a social accounting matrix (SAM) of Chad for the year 2018. This SAM was further used to build a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model that I will use for policy simulation on reformulating industrial policy in Chad. The same approach was applied to the data of DRC, and I plan to conduct comparative policy simulations for both countries.
The research output for these first two years have been compiled in a book and sent to the Publisher. Other research outputs have also been submitted as book chapters. I have also presented the findings of the project is the leading academic conferences in the field. The paper on "Structural change and premature deindustrialization in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1970-2013: An Input-Output Perspective" was presented at the 27th International Input-Output Conference at Glasgow. I attended the 2020 Allied Social Sciences Associations (ASSA) Annual Meeting to present the findings on "Africa's manufacturing development under the rise of China". The preliminary results of the modeling exercise for Chad will be presented in the 2020 Online GTAP conference. Regarding the vulgarization of the research project outcomes, I joined an international industrial policy workshop in Chad with the support of the Economic Commission for Africa, where I trained those in charge of policy and international economic cooperation to the use of the CGE model and SAM.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The only impediment to the progress of the research has been the lengthy peer-review process in international journals and the COVID-19 that is currently affecting research activities and travel.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
This year is the final year of the project, which aims to summarize the results of the research and publish the results of the project in an integrated manner. I am currently revising the papers presented at academic conferences for submission to the journal. After the COVID-19 is over and after it is safe to travel again, I will hold an international industrial policy workshop in DRC to present the project findings and share the modeling tools I developed in this project.
|
Causes of Carryover |
While finalizing the simulations analysis for DRC, I will start to analyze the data of Chad and carry policy simulations. I will also complete the policy simulation manuscript and submit for publication.
