Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year, I focused on documenting the findings of the research in the form of books and papers. Specifically, I summarized the research outputs into 2 books and more than five academic papers. The studies show that the core of global manufacturing value-added has shifted away from traditional labor-intensive manufacturing into products that embody higher technology. Industrial promotion today, thus, calls for facilitations for industrial (manufacturing) upgrading, rather than a mere expansion of low-skill labor-intensive manufacturing activities. The results suggest that premature deindustrialization tends to emerge when countries are confined to low-skill manufacturing even when they can participate in GVCs.

Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The field data collection and Policy Dialogue was delayed due to travel restriction under COVID-19.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Plans for FY2021 include completing and submitting the book to the publisher. To present the findings at the third international conference of the Japan Society for Afrasian Studies in July.
|
Causes of Carryover |
I was unable to spend the specified amount as I was forced to cancel an international symposium and data collection due to COVID-19. I will use the money to conduct online surveys and publish the book.
