Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
We developed a method for measuring D/H position-specific isotope composition of propane. The method involves cracking propane into small fragments and analyzing the D/H ratio of the fragments. Then, the latter can be used to reconstruct the original positional D/H pattern of propane.
We tested the re-arrangement of H-atoms by using H-labelled propane purchased with this Kakenhi. Some re-arrangement occurs, but corrections can be made to account for this.
Natural gas samples from various origins (abiotic, thermogenic, biodegraded) were then analyzed and showed significantly different position-specific patterns. This provides the first evidence that the origin of propane can be elucidated with D/H position-specific analysis.
