Outline of Annual Research Achievements

惑星表層環境を規定する重要な要素である水や二酸化炭素などの揮発性物質の進化を理解するためには、太陽活動に伴って大気散逸がどのように変動するかを理解することが重要である。本研究は、米国NASAの火星探査機MAVENチームとの密接な国際共同研究を実施することにより、激しい太陽変動にどのように応答するかの解明を目指している。特に、MAVEN Participating Scientistとしての国際連携を発展させ、MAVEN計画の科学責任者、副責任者の研究協力を得て国際共同チームにより観測と数値実験の比較データ解析共同研究を推進し、国際共同研究を強化する計画である。
計画最終年度となる本年度には、火星オーロラに焦点をあて、海外の共同研究者も含めた研究計画関係者が対面で議論を行うためのワークショップを開催し、オーロラ研究の現状を整理するとともに、未解決問題の解明に向けた研究戦略をまとめた。また、本研究計画全体にわたった火星探査機MAVENのデータ解析に基づく国際共同研究の主な成果としては、以下が挙げられる。また本研究には、複数の大学院生も参加し、修士論文3編、博士論文1編の学位論文にも結びつくなど、若手研究者育成にも寄与することができた。
火星からの低エネルギーイオンの誘導磁気圏尾部からの流出メカニズムの局在性の発見と太陽風条件への依存性の解明(JGR誌掲載)、火星からのイオンプリュームによる大気流出のイオン種依存性の解明(JGR誌掲載)、火星電離圏のイオン種毎の密度変動に対する太陽変動と下層大気変動の影響の統計的性質の整理)火星電離圏界面でのKelvin-Helmholtz不安定が従来考えられていたより起こりやすい原因を解明(Frontiers誌掲載)火星オーロラと夜側電離圏観測の比較により降下電子がオーロラ発光と電子衝突電離を同時に引き起こしていることを示唆。
