Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study showed that the systemic environment regulates disease progression in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We identified the key factor that promotes neurodegeneration in ALS mice.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究は筋萎縮性側索硬化症の病態形成に病巣より遠位の臓器が関わることを示すもので、見出された神経変性作用をもつ分子は、薬剤開発のターゲット分子になるポテンシャルを有する。本研究では筋萎縮性側索硬化症を対象として解析を進めるが、確立するコンセプトは神経免疫が関連する疾患や末梢性疾患の理解につながるもので、幅広い疾患に対して新しい方向性を提示するものである。
