Research Abstract

本研究課題ではスバールバル諸島とカナダ北極の比較研究を通して高緯度地域における氷河後退に伴う植生変化を地形、地表面、生物多様性、炭素循環過程によって観測し、ツンドラ生態系の変動が気候システムに与える影響を予測することを目的としている。氷河後退域は、生態遷移の格好のフィールドとして、古くから研究対象にされてきた。これらの研究は、最終氷期以降の遷移段階に沿った、植生をはじめとする生物相の変遷とその要因解析が主なものである。2009年7月、スピッツベルゲン島において、種子植物、蘚苔類、地衣類、菌類とそれぞれの環境の関わりについて調査した。氷河後退域では遷移の進行に伴う変化と、温暖化による環境変化が同時に進行しており、炭素循環機能はその両方の影響下にある。前者はリモートセンシング手法と遷移に沿った現地調査、後者はモデル解析が最も有力な手段である。本年度はこれらのアプローチを総合し、地球観測衛星データが存在する1980年代から将来にわたる植物生態系の分布および構造や機能の変化について観測した。これにより、炭素の蓄積量や放出量などの経時的な変動や、温暖化による機能変化についての情報が得られ、陸上生態系の機能変化が気候環境にもたらすフィードバックに関する理解が得られた。同様に、8月、北極カナダ大陸最北部のコッパーマインでの環境と植生の違いにっいて調査した。これまでに緯度の異なった地域としてエルズミア島、アクセルハイバーグ島、コンウオーリス島、ビクトリア島で比較研究を行ってきたが、本年度の調査では数種のヤナギ属が生育するツンドラの南限に相当する地域の貴重な情報を得ることができた。
