Research Abstract |
This research work redefined social capital into three categories ; public goods, club goods, and private goods. We clarified five features of externalities of social capital including its vulnerability to internalization into market. Our analysis based on national survey data on social capital and economic inequality by prefecture shows an increase in wealth gap gives stronger negative effects on social capital than income gap does. Our study also revealed that social capital, which promotes social participation, is related to per capita medical expenditures of the elderly.
