Research Abstract

前年度にNatureに論文発表を行ったメキシコ湾流の大気応答に関して, データ解析, 領域大気モデル, 大気大循環モデルを用いた複合的研究を行った. データ解析では, 夏季と冬季に大きく異なる大気応答が生じることを示し, これを仮に夏季モード, 冬季モードと名付けた. 領域大気モデルでは, 力学的なメカニズムを同定する手法を開発し, これを湾流に対する接地境界層応答に適用して, 風の水平収束の大部分が圧力調整メカニズムによることを定量的に明らかにした. この風の収束は, 降水や対流圏上空に及ぶ上昇気流と関連して興味深いものである. また, 大気大循環モデルAFESでの実験から、SSTフロントに沿って現れる降水バンドが、SST勾配に伴う表面風の収束に伴う水蒸気収束とメキシコ湾流からの蒸発によってもたらされ、鉛直風の応答高度は季節変化する対流圏の安定度に伴って季節変動することを明らかにした。
また、大気海洋結合モデルCFESを用いて20年以上の全球高解像度計算を実施し、人工衛星観測で捉えられている海洋フロント域での風応力場の構造や降水量の分布などが、計算結果において再現されていることを確認した。さらに, 環オホーツク圏領域気候モデルを用いて1998年7月に発達したオホーツク海高気圧とそれに伴う下層雲について再現実験を行い、現場観測と比較した。定量的には改善の余地があるが、下層雲または霧の有無による境界層の構造の違いが概ね再現された。
