Research Abstract |
The effects of maternal exposure to 2,3,7,8-tetra- chlorodibenzo- p-dioxin (TCDD), an environmental pollutant, on fetal maturation were studied in rats. The fetuses exposed to TCDD showed not only a reduction in the expression of gonadal proteins necessary for sex-steroid syntheses, but also impaired activity in sexual behaviors at adulthood. We also obtained evidence that above damages are due to a TCDD-produced reduction in fetal pituitary gonadotropins, luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone.
