| Research Abstract |
アメリカ・ポピュリズムの基本綱領であるオマハ綱領の三大綱目の一つである「交通・運輸」綱目においては鉄道、電信、電話の国有・国営が主張されている。このような要求の起源については、従来より、それは南北戦争後の農民を中心にしたグレンジャー運動にあるとされてきた。これに対して本研究代表者は、その起源はさらに古く、1820～1830年代の北部で展開された州政府主導の運河開削、鉄道敷設事業のなかで生じた、運河や鉄道は公共財であるとの理念に発することを明らかにした。
