Research Abstract |
The cosmopolitan feature of the Italian enlightenment is made clear in three points. Firstly, the introduction of Encyclopedie gave the basis of the perspective that luxury is the motive power of the progress of civilization, secondly, Helvetius suggested the idea of luxury as social surplus and this idea led the Italian enlightenment thinkers to the issue of distributing surplus products in a society, thirdly, with regard to the history of economic thought in Italy, the the idea of luxury was essential as the linkage between consumption and accumulation of the social surplus.
