Research Abstract |
Three issues about the nature of the financial system of prewar Japan are examined. It is shown that there was a division of labor between banks and financial markets in the prewar period, that the evolution of the financial system was largely governed by the preference of asset holders, and that the prewar financial system was evolving toward the bank-centered system of the postwar period.
