Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to clarify the energy expenditure of dementia patients with wandering symptoms. Results of a time study to monitor daily activities of a dementia patient, who had been wandering for hours and losing weight, clearly indicated excessive energy expenditure. Hypoalbuminemia was found in 42.6% of institutionalized elderly people with cognitive dysfunction. On the other hand, frail elderly people that had taken all meals based on an adequate nutritional assessment and had been in good mental health maintained energy intake and energy expenditure well-balanced, and no hypoalbuminemia was found in them.
