Research Abstract

海棲生物が形成する炭酸塩殻体の物理化学的組成は,殻体形成時の海水の温度を記録する.そこで,化石として保存されている微生物や,アンモナイト類,あるいは二枚貝類の殻体の分析を行い,白亜紀の大陸棚海に大繁栄していたアンモナイト類や,二枚貝類などの生活様式,特に生息場所や繁殖様式の解明を行った.
その結果,当時の北海道周辺の海洋の表面付近の温度は約26℃と高温で,一部の二枚貝類は流木などに付着して生活していたことが明らかになった.また,予察的に行ったジュラ紀のアンモナイト類の分析では,幼期のアンモナイトは低水温場に生息し成長とともに高水温場に移動することが示唆された.
