Research Abstract |
1. The development of land use and land administration system from the 9^<th> to 13^<th> centuries was intensively investigated. on two pictorial maps: Nukatadera garan narabini jorizu of the Nara prefecture and Bicyunokuni Kayogun Hattorigozu of the Okayama prefecture. The relationships of the maps and the recent landscapes were discussed in detail in the previous research of this topic. 2. The analyses of irrigation systems with the aid of Geographic Information Systems revealed that the development of agricultural water supply was dramatically changed between the two periods. 3. The results of archaeological excavations were examined in the relation of newly identified Jori system of the Hattori region. A recently excavated archaeological site of a manor house, Gosyo Site, was especially investigated. 4. Historical landscapes of the two regions were reconstructed using Geographic Information Systems. They were also compared with the landscape of the York region and the Medieval document of Domesday Book. of England. 5. For the purpose of reconstructing historical landscape, the data of published digital elevation model were tried to be used. However, the resolution of these data was so insufficient for such purposes that some programs of interpolation in a GRASS GIS were tried. 6. The report of the results of this research was published. It includes the manuals of developed programs of GISmap, DrawGrid and Shadeview.
